FAQs

The press is not suitable for:

printing from a distorted (bent) matrix, for dry seal printing and for very deep etchings.

Which press is suitable for my work - the small or the large one?

If you print graphics, no matter what technique, mainly up to the A4 size, I recommend the small press.  If you choose a large format from time to time, you can naturally print it with the small press. If you mainly print formats larger than the A4 size, I recommend the large press. On the contrary, the large press is very difficult to handle on formats smaller than the A4 size.

I want the large press. Which model, the 60 or 150, is more suitable for me?

Both types of the large press work on the same principle and they have the same dimensions. They vary in the number and size of balls. The greater the number of balls the richer the print is as more pressure points are concentrated in the same area.  However, this applies to only specific and thus limited paper weight (grammage). The Model 150 Press is recommended for printing on paper up to 250 g/m2 of paper weight. The Model 60 Press is more suitable for paper thicker than 250 g/m2.

Can I also achieve quality printing with the large press without additional weights?

Yes, you can. It is necessary to adapt the pressure in connection to the technique and the paper you use. Without the weights you can use your own strength to apply the pressure on the press as needed. In order to make your work easier, especially where stronger pressure is needed and the number of prints is higher (more than ten pieces) I recommend the additional weights.

How many weights should I purchase?

The additional weights are for the large press only where the maximum of 8 weights can be added.
It can be said, in general, that the intaglio printing requires more pressure, thus more weights than other printing techniques. At the same time, one has to consider the thickness of the paper used. The thicker the paper the stronger pressure is needed. The most frequent number of weights used is 0 to 4. The weights can also be ordered independently later.

Does the paper move when printing?

When printing with the ball press the paper must be always placed on a matrix. Fix the paper to the board/desk with one hand while you handle the press with your other hand; the paper on the matrix will not move. The weight of the press itself and the rotating balls keep the paper on the matrix. The paper stays stable under the Sláma Press in contrast to some roller presses where the paper stretches when moved between the rollers. Graphic artists will appreciate this feature in printing registration.

Will dry-point technique burr get damaged?

When using low paper weight I recommend placing a dry sheet of paper on top of the damp one and moving the press over the dry sheet. This will prevent any damage to paper and keep the sharpness of burr in large print quantities. There is no need to add dry paper when printing on paper weight higher than 250 g/m3; no damage to the burr on the matrix will occur either.

What paper can I use?

The smoother and more starved paper, the better. Paper weight from about 80 do 300 g/m2. Corrugated and highly structured paper is not recommended. It holds true here, too, that graphic art techniques offer unlimited opportunities. One can experiment with various kinds of paper as well as fabrics and other materials.

Can I use the Sláma Press to print on textile?

Yes, you can. The printing press is suitable for printing on t-shirts etc.
For this kind of print I recommend fixing the fabric in a frame and placing paper between the fabric and the press. This is not necessary every time as it depends on the kind of fabric. The procedure for printing on fabric is the same as when printing on paper.

There is an extra screw supplied with the large press. What is it for?

The large press offers an advantage in its variable grip for utmost comfort during printing. The press is supplied with a screwed-on wooden handle. You can unscrew this handle and replace it with the steel cover from the wooden handle. You can then screw it onto the press using the extra screw. See picture.

What can I do if I find the press unsuitable for my work?

You can return the press in pristine condition at your cost to the seller within 30 days from the purchase. Your money will be returned to you within 7 days from the receipt of the press by the seller. Please inform the seller of your intention to return the press in advance by phone or email.
